Bugs Killed

Windows

Z: drive mapping would not stay connected when using the server name

The Z: shared drive could not be accessed reliably when it was mapped by server name. It was remapped using the IP address instead, and the mapping stayed after reboot.

Killed once by someone from XL.net, on 2025-09-30.

What you see

  • Z: drive access fails or the mapped drive does not stay connected when the server name is used.

Why it happens

Suspected The Z: drive mapping by server name was not sticking on this PC; remapping by IP address resolved access.

When it shows up

A Windows PC cannot keep the Z: mapped drive when it is pointed at the server name.

You are in this case if:

  • The Z: mapping does not persist after reboot when the server name is used.
  • Mapping the same share by IP address stays connected after reboot.
