Windows password change did not sync to Active Directory, so network shares stayed unavailable
After a password change, the user could still sign in to Windows with the old password and could sign in to VPN with the new password, but shared network files were unavailable. The fix was to lock the PC and sign back in with the new password while VPN was connected so the credentials resynced and the network drives returned.

What you see
- User can still log in to the PC with the old password after changing the VPN password.
- VPN works with the new password, but shared network files or mapped network drives cannot be accessed.
Why it happens
Likely The password was not yet synced in Active Directory, so the Windows logon credentials and network drive access were out of sync.
When it shows up
A user changes their password, can still open Windows with the old password, and loses access to shared network drives even though VPN login with the new password works.
You are in this case if:
- Windows sign-in still accepts the old password.
- VPN authentication succeeds with the new password.
- Mapped network drives are disconnected or unavailable.
