Windows
Second monitor was not detected because the monitor was on the wrong input
The external display was not coming up as a second monitor, and Windows Detect did not find it. The monitor was switched to HDMI, then the monitor order was configured so both screens worked correctly, including with the laptop lid closed.

Affects
Hardware
- laptop
- external monitor
- monitor cable
- HDMI
What you see
- Windows Detect does not discover the second monitor.
- The external display is not showing up on both monitors.
Why it happens
Likely The monitor was set to the wrong input source instead of HDMI.
When it shows up
A Windows laptop is connected to an external monitor but the second screen is not detected and the monitor is on the wrong input source.
You are in this case if:
- Windows display settings > Detect does not find the external monitor.
- The monitor's on-screen input/source menu shows the wrong input selected instead of HDMI.
