Second monitor not working on a docked laptop

The second monitor stopped working after it had been fine the day before. Reseating the docking station power cable and the laptop connection reset the dock and the monitor started working normally again.

Affects

Versions

  • Windows

Hardware

  • second monitor
  • docking station
  • laptop

What you see

  • External second monitor is not working and stays blank after previously working normally.

Why it happens

Likely The docking station connection likely needed to be reset; the power cable and laptop connection were not seated or behaving correctly.

When it shows up

A laptop uses a docking station and the second monitor stops displaying output even though it worked before.

You are in this case if:

  • Laptop connected through a docking station
  • external monitor attached to the dock
  • reseating the dock power cable and laptop connection restores the display
