Windows
Restart and shut down failed until the user profile was rebuilt
The laptop would not restart or shut down through the normal power options, and forced shutdown was also troublesome. The old domain user profile was backed up, removed, and recreated; user data was restored and the power features then worked correctly.

Affects
Versions
- Windows
Hardware
- Laptop
What you see
- Restart and Shut down did not work through standard procedures.
- Holding the power button for a forced shutdown was also troublesome.
Why it happens
Likely Likely corruption or bad behavior in the old domain user profile.
When it shows up
A Windows laptop shows broken normal power actions for the signed-in user, and the issue follows that user profile rather than the hardware.
You are in this case if:
- Restart and Shut down are not working from the normal power options.
- Forced shutdown by holding the power button is also troublesome.
