Phantom keyboard and mouse input while docked

A docked laptop was adding extra keyboard and mouse inputs, including numbers changing and windows switching on their own. The technician found nothing suspicious, cleaned up startup items, installed pending system/driver/firmware updates, ran Disk Cleanup, and the issue had not returned at follow-up.

Killed once by someone from XL.net, on 2026-07-13.

Affects

Hardware

  • laptop dock
  • wired keyboard
  • wired mouse

What you see

  • Extra inputs appear that the user did not make
  • Numbers change unexpectedly
  • Windows switch on their own

Why it happens

Suspected Suspected out-of-date system, driver, or firmware state together with startup-item clutter; nothing harmful or suspicious was found during the checks.

When it shows up

A Windows laptop only shows phantom keyboard or mouse input while connected to a dock and the input devices are wired rather than wireless.

You are in this case if:

  • The problem happens only when the laptop is on the dock
  • Wired keyboard and wired mouse are in use
  • No wireless input devices are involved
