Windows
Java file opens as an unknown blank file and prompts for Open With
Windows was treating the affected Java-linked file as an unrecognized white blank file instead of launching Java. The file association was repaired by pointing it to javaws in the installed Java 8 bin folder, and the app opened normally.
Killed once by someone from XL.net, on 2026-03-18.
Affects
Versions
- Windows
Apps
- Java
- javaws
What you see
- The target file shows as a white blank icon
- Opening it brings up Open With instead of launching the Java app
- The app does not start until the file is mapped to Java Web Start
Why it happens
Likely The file association for the affected Java-linked file was broken or unrecognized, so Windows did not know to open it with javaws
When it shows up
A Java-linked file appears as an unknown blank file and Windows offers Open With instead of launching the app
You are in this case if:
- The file has a blank white icon
- Open With appears for the file
- Java 8 is installed and javaws is available in C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_481\bin
