Intermittent physical keyboard keys not working in some applications

Spacebar, backspace, and other physical keyboard keys were failing intermittently in some applications while On-Screen Keyboard still worked. The technician installed a pending BIOS update and reset the keyboard drivers to default, then confirmed the keys worked normally in apps.

Versions

Hardware

What you see

  • Physical keys such as spacebar and backspace stop responding intermittently in some software.
  • On-Screen Keyboard works normally.
  • The problem is app-specific rather than a complete keyboard failure.

Why it happens

Suspected A pending BIOS update was present and was treated as the likely contributing issue, but the ticket does not prove a root cause.

When it shows up

A Windows computer has intermittent failures of certain physical keyboard keys only in some applications, while On-Screen Keyboard still works.

You are in this case if:

  • On-Screen Keyboard input works normally.
  • A pending BIOS update is available on the affected machine.
  • No custom keyboard app conflict was found during review.
