HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 printer would not print until the port was corrected and the printer was reinstalled

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 was already installed but would not print. Changing the printer from a WSD port to the printer IP made a test page print, and after removing the duplicate/error entries the printer was uninstalled and reinstalled and then worked.

Affects

Hardware

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 all-in-one

What you see

  • Printer is already installed but does not work.
  • Changing the port to the printer IP allows a test page to print.
  • A duplicate printer and error messages appear after the port change.

Why it happens

Likely The installed printer queue was using a WSD port that was not working correctly; the printer installation also ended up with duplicate/error entries.

When it shows up

A Windows printer is installed but will not print, and its queue is using a WSD port instead of the printer IP.

You are in this case if:

  • Printer Properties shows a WSD port selected.
  • Printing a test page only works after changing the port to the printer IP.
  • A duplicate printer or related error messages appear after the port change.
