Frozen remote desktop session on a virtual machine

The computer appeared frozen in a remote desktop session: the mouse moved but nothing else responded. The technician rebooted the virtual machine, replaced the old Remote Desktop app with Windows App, and reconnected; after startup programs loaded, the system ran normally and programs opened without issues.

Killed once by someone from XL.net, on 2026-03-24.

Affects

Apps

  • Remote Desktop application
  • Windows App

What you see

  • Mouse pointer moves but clicks and normal input do not respond in the session
  • Remote desktop session appears frozen until the virtual machine is rebooted and reconnected

Why it happens

Likely An outdated Remote Desktop application was likely part of the issue; reconnecting with the newer Windows App restored normal access.

When it shows up

A user can move the mouse in a remote session but cannot interact with the desktop, and the machine is reached through the Remote Desktop application.

You are in this case if:

  • Remote Desktop application is installed instead of Windows App
  • The session is to a virtual machine
  • Reconnecting after a reboot restores normal input
