Flickering desktop icons fixed by rebuilding the user profile

The desktop icons were flickering, and the default PDF app was also misbehaving. The technician backed up the user data, deleted the user profile, rebooted, and signed back in; the flickering stopped and the PDF setting was restored.

Affects

Apps

  • Adobe Acrobat
  • Microsoft Edge

What you see

  • Desktop icons flicker on the Windows desktop.
  • Default PDF program does not stay set as expected.

Why it happens

Likely Suspected corrupted user profile; deleting and recreating the profile resolved the icon flicker and the PDF association issue.

When it shows up

A Windows user reports flickering desktop icons and the issue follows the user profile rather than the machine itself.

You are in this case if:

  • Desktop icons visibly flicker on sign-in.
  • Changing the default PDF app does not stick until the profile is rebuilt.
