Windows
External monitors not recognized through docking station
External monitors were not being recognized when connected through the dock. The technician suspected a bad HDMI port on the docking station, moved one monitor to a direct laptop connection, extended the display settings, and restarted the laptop to correct the resolution on one monitor.

Affects
Versions
- Windows
Hardware
- docking station
- external monitors
- laptop
What you see
- External monitors are not detected
- One monitor needs to be connected directly to the laptop to work
- One monitor has the wrong resolution until the display layout is extended and the laptop is restarted
Why it happens
Likely Suspected bad HDMI port on the docking station
When it shows up
A Windows laptop has external monitors that stop being recognized when they are connected through a docking station, but one monitor works when plugged directly into the laptop.
You are in this case if:
- One display works only when bypassing the dock
- The dock HDMI path appears to be the failing connection
- Display resolution is not correct until display settings are extended and the laptop is restarted
