External monitor would not reengage after docking
After the laptop was reconnected at the office, the right external monitor kept disconnecting and going into power saving mode. Swapping to a spare docking station did not change it; changing that monitor’s input from wireless to HDMI restored normal connection.

Affects
Hardware
- laptop
- docking station
- external monitor
What you see
- Right monitor repeatedly disconnects after the laptop is reconnected to the dock.
- The monitor goes into power saving mode instead of showing the desktop.
Why it happens
Likely Suspected monitor input mismatch: the right monitor was on wireless input until it was changed to HDMI.
When it shows up
A docked laptop loses an external monitor after reconnecting and the monitor keeps dropping into power saving mode.
You are in this case if:
- The monitor repeatedly disconnects or shows a power-saving screen after the laptop is re-docked.
- Swapping the dock does not change the behavior.
- Changing that monitor’s input to HDMI restores display output.
