Excel freezing/crashing with low virtual memory

Excel and other apps were freezing or crashing on a Windows laptop. The technician repaired Microsoft Office, ran Windows file-repair checks including DISM, and increased virtual memory; the freezing was not recurring at closure.

Killed once by someone from XL.net, on 2026-05-22.

Affects

Apps

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Microsoft Office

Hardware

  • laptop

What you see

  • Excel would not close and was freezing or crashing
  • Programs were slow to complete tasks
  • Teams was randomly shutting down or not working

Why it happens

Likely Suspected low virtual memory was contributing to the freezes/crashes; Windows file corruption was also checked for and repaired.

When it shows up

A Windows laptop shows Excel crashes/freezes, general slowness, or similar app instability, and Event Viewer shows an Excel application crash plus a low virtual memory event.

You are in this case if:

  • Event Viewer contains an Excel application crash
  • Event Viewer contains a low virtual memory event
