Windows
Domain error at sign-in on a Windows laptop
The laptop could not be signed in because it reported that the domain was not available. The technician removed the device from the domain, joined it to Entra, and copied the contents of the old profile into a new user profile.

Affects
Hardware
- laptop
What you see
- Error message: 'the domain is not available'
- Unable to sign in to the computer with the existing setup
Why it happens
Likely The device was still attached to the domain and needed to be moved to Entra for sign-in to work.
When it shows up
A Windows laptop shows a domain-not-available message during sign-in and the user cannot get into the machine.
You are in this case if:
- Sign-in message: 'the domain is not available'
- Device status shows domain-joined instead of Entra-joined
