Docked system external monitor not working until display mode was changed

A replaced monitor was still not working on a docked Windows computer. The docking station was restarted and the Windows display setting was changed to Extend, after which both monitors worked normally.

Killed 2 times by someone from XL.net, most recently on 2026-03-03.

Affects

Hardware

  • docking station
  • external monitor

What you see

  • Second monitor did not show correctly while docked.
  • The monitor issue remained after the monitor was replaced.

Why it happens

Likely The docking station needed to be restarted and the computer was not set to extend the display to the second monitor.

When it shows up

A computer is connected through a docking station and one external monitor is not displaying correctly, especially after monitor replacement or reattachment.

You are in this case if:

  • The second display is missing or not extended on a docked computer.
  • The display configuration is not set to Extend for the external monitor.
