Bugs Killed

Windows

Disk space was filling from SupportAssist snapshots and the Windows Search index

The drive kept running nearly full and the computer was starting to lock up. The technician cleared Dell SupportAssist snapshots/backups and reset the Windows Search index, which freed about 52 GB.

Affects

Versions

  • Windows

Apps

  • Dell SupportAssist
  • Windows Search

What you see

  • Free space drops to around 100 MB or less
  • The computer starts to lock up as storage fills up

Why it happens

Likely Dell SupportAssist snapshots/backups were using a considerable amount of disk space, and the Windows Search index had grown large enough to consume significant storage.

When it shows up

A Windows computer is unexpectedly low on disk space and SupportAssist or Windows Search is using more storage than it should.

You are in this case if:

  • Dell SupportAssist is installed and has created update snapshots/backups
  • Windows Search index storage is large and growing over time
