macOS 27 Golden Gate never appears in Software Update on my Mac
Software Update says your Mac is up to date even though macOS 27 Golden Gate has reached the September 14, 2026 launch date Apple announced. On most Macs that means the model is not on Apple's compatibility list. macOS 27 runs only on Macs with Apple silicon, so every Intel Mac stops at macOS Tahoe 26, which still gets security updates.
Affects
Versions
- macOS Tahoe 26
- macOS Sequoia 15
- macOS 27 Golden Gate
Apps
- Software Update
Hardware
- Intel based Macs
What you see
- Software Update says your Mac is up to date, with no upgrade offered
- macOS 27 Golden Gate is not listed anywhere in System Settings
- Other people with newer Macs are already installing it
Why it happens
Confirmed Apple's own rule for the update screen is that "Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac model". When a Mac is not compatible with an upgrade, Software Update does not offer it and says the Mac is up to date. [2]
When it shows up
About This Mac shows an Intel processor
You are in this case if:
- About This Mac names an Intel processor rather than an Apple M series chip
- Software Update offers updates for macOS Tahoe 26 but no upgrade
- The Mac is not on Apple's macOS 27 compatibility list

The Mac is on Apple's macOS 27 list, but Software Update has not offered the upgrade yet
You are in this case if:
- About This Mac names an Apple M series chip and the model matches a line on Apple's macOS 27 list
- The Software Update pane still shows the macOS Tahoe 26 version the Mac is on, or says "your Mac is up to date"
- Software Update has not been re-checked since the release, or the Mac is set not to look for updates on its own

Keeping it away
- Before buying software or hardware that needs the newest macOS, check Apple's compatibility list for that release.
- Keep the Mac on the newest macOS it does support, so security updates keep arriving.
